According to a 2007 USA Today article, a distinct percentage of Gallup poll respondents — luckily, 13% of them — wouldn't want a room on the 13th floor. First, the number 4 is unlucky in many Asian cultures. It's one thing people don't want to stay at 14, 24 or 34, but having ten extra floors they get upset about just isn't worth it. If you were to go down to the 14th floor, it would actually be the 13th floor of the building, so there is still a 13th floor but it's just not 'named'. For many people, that's enough.
