Take the hotel elevator to your room, and there may be something missing: the number 13 on the control panel. According to a 2007 USA Today article, a distinct percentage of Gallup poll respondents — luckily, 13% of them — wouldn't want a room on the 13th floor. Bill Marriott Jr., chairman of Marriott International, told USA Today at the time, "That's one of the first things I learned: don't go to 13."

Superstition around the number 13

Admittedly, the problems with the number 13 extend far beyond the hotel world. In Norse mythology, an infamous Valhalla dinner party was interrupted by the 13th arrival, the troublemaker god Loki. Ask us for a quote for a cheaper hotel room - Use code ASEARLY

Whatever its causes, many people continue to be scared of numbers. Surveys have shown that around 10% of the population suffers from triskaidekaphobia, or fear of the number 13. Why hotels skip floor 13

Granted, that's not what any hotel manager would want. Indeed, according to Otis Elevators, up to 85% of the elevator panels it produces do not have the number 13. Some buildings simply skip 12 to 14, or coyly label a floor 12A, 14A, or the "mezzanine" or "M". (Fun fact: M is also the 13th letter of the alphabet.) The number four is often missing from Asian hotel room numbers, as well as street addresses and restaurant tables. The underlying reason: In Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese, the word for the number 4 sounds a lot like the word for death.

"If I remember correctly, the Wynn does not have floors numbered between 40 and 49." This is done for two reasons:

First, the number 4 is unlucky in many Asian cultures. It's one thing people don't want to stay at 14, 24 or 34, but having ten extra floors they get upset about just isn't worth it. Second, hotels can boast of having higher floors. The VooDoo "50th floor" lounge in Rio, I believe, is only 40 floors above the ground.

Why Don’T Hotels Have A 13Th Floor?

Many hotels and other buildings around the world do not mark the 13th floor. About 85% of elevators won't have a listing for the 13th floor, opting to label the floor as "maintenance" or "mezzanine", while others use "12B" or "14A" instead. Even though this number is known to be unlucky, up to 87% of guests don't mind having a room on the 13th floor. Moreover, even if it is not directly labeled, the 13th floor still exists. Meanwhile, 13 cannot be evenly divided and as a beyond the "perfect" number, it destroys that harmony and balance. At that time, even the tallest buildings were no taller than 12 stories to avoid casting “inconvenient shadows” on the ground. This means that people did not think of building beyond the 13th floor until much later. Since many people still had fears around the number 13, skipping the floor made sense. As we mentioned earlier, most hotel guests don't mind a room on this infamous floor. While most people don't mind a room on the 13th floor, there are quite a few that do. Converting the 13th floor into a maintenance floor makes sense - if customers aren't comfortable with a certain number of floors, why not convert that unwanted floor into needed space? Even if you don't feel any different on a Friday the 13th, there have been plenty of people who do.

The roots of the bad luck of number 13

The number 12 is often considered a "perfect" and complete number, so following right on its heels, the unfortunate 13 can be found lacking and unusual. Additionally, historical events where a 13th guest arrived also put a negative spin on this number. There are, of course, countries and cultures that have a completely different interpretation of the number (for example, the Italians have traditionally considered 13 to be particularly lucky). Effects on property

Why Hotels Don’T Have A 13Th Floor [2021]

Anyway, believe it or not, a lot of hotels try to avoid having a (named) 13th floor and sometimes even avoid having rooms with the number 13. There may -maybe no exact data on the number of hotels that do not have a 13th floor but the company Otis Elevators estimates that "85% of buildings with their elevators do not have a named 13th floor".

This is a very large number and so I would expect that many if not most hotels in the US will not have a named 13th floor. This means that if you were looking at an elevator, you would simply see:

11, 12, 14, 15…

If you were to go down to the 14th floor, it would actually be the 13th floor of the building, so there is still a 13th floor but it's just not 'named'. For many people, that's enough. When it comes to hotels, many properties want to accommodate as many guests as possible, and with a significant percentage of the population struggling to stay in a room on the 13th floor, many hotels have taken steps to avoid having a named 13th floor. .
